Cajón Grande, Parque Nacional La Campana
Due to its ecological, scientific, educational, cultural and recreational importance, Parque Nacional La Campana has been declared one of the nine Biosphere Reserves in Chile by UNESCO. The park is divided into three sections, each one with distinct characteristics: Granizo, Cajón Grande y Palmas de Ocoa. Whilst the sector of Ocoa is famous for having the largest existing concentration of Chile cocopalms (jubaea chilensis), Granizo is known for its forests of Roble de Santiago (nothofagus macrocarpa). In autumn their reddish colours stand out from the rest of the flora typical in the Andean foothills of the central zone.
The route Los Robles – Portezuelo Ocoa ascends the southern slop of the Cajón Grande towards the Ocoa Pass which connects the three sectors of the Parque Nacional La Campana, and from where you will have beautiful 360° views. Along the way you will walk through dense sclerophyll forest. The route is 11km in distance (there and back), and can be completed in approx. 5h.
All year round, but we recommend that you visit in autumn so that you can enjoy the beautiful colours of the changing leaves of the Robles de Santiago.
To reach the Granizo sector of the Parque Nacional La Campana, you will need to reach the village of Olmué. See here how to get to Olmué.
From Olmué to Parque Nacional La Campana
From Olmué, head east towards the sector of Granizo, which is just next to the village and accessible via the main street, Arturo Pratt, which then becomes route F-590 or Avenida Granizo. When you reach the bus stop N°40 in Granizo (signposted), you will see a turning to the right (southeast) to Cajón Grande in the Parque Nacional La Campana. Continue for another 3km (only the first 2km are paved) until you reach the Conaf guard post, where you can your car. Always follow the signs for “Sector Cajón Grande, Parque Nacional La Campana”.
From the centre of Olmué or from the bus stop N°40 in Granizo, you can hire a taxi for approx. CLP$5000 (USD$10) to take you to the Conaf guard post.
The entry fees to Parque Nacional La Campana are as follows: Chilean adult CLP$2000 (approx. US$4), Chilean child CLP$1000 (approx. US$2), foreign adult CLP$2500 (approx. US$5), foreign child CLP$1500 (approx. US$3).
In the sector of Granizo in the park there is a campsite run by Conaf. It costs CLP$6000 (approx. USD$12) for a site for 6 people, and an extra CLP$1000 (approx. USD$2) for each extra person. There are toilets at the campsite.
In the last few years there has been a severe drought in the area, and Conaf has had to close the campsite on occasions due to a lack of water. We recommend that you contact the park before visiting to find out what the current water situation is at the time of travel.
